Finding the Right "Fit": What to Expect in Your First Consultation
In my last article, we explored how the relationship between a therapist and client is the single most important factor in creating lasting change. But knowing that the relationship matters is only the first step. The next question is often more daunting: How do I actually find the right person to walk alongside me?
The Courage to Reach Out
Taking the first step towards therapy requires a significant amount of courage and a leap of faith. It is completely natural to feel new-starter nerves or a sense of vulnerability when considering being seen by a professional for the first time. I often think of this as the “threshold" moment—that point where you are standing on the edge of a new start, feeling the discomfort of the unknown. You aren't just making an appointment; you are making a commitment to yourself.
Please know that you don’t have to wait for those nerves to disappear before you begin. The fact that you are even considering therapy means you have already taken the first bravest forward and the internal work has already started.
What is a 20-Minute Consultation?
To help make this first step feel as straightforward and low-pressure as possible, I offer a free 20-minute phone consultation. This isn't a therapy session; it is a dedicated, quiet space for us to connect.
During this chat, we typically:
Share a little bit about what is bringing you to therapy right now.
Discuss how I work and how a blend of psychotherapy and hypnotherapy might support your specific goals.
Answer any questions you might have about the process.
Finding the Fit
Most importantly, this time is for you to get a feel for whether I am the right therapist for you. Therapy is a collaborative partnership and you deserve to feel confident in your choice of guide.
There is no contractual obligation and absolutely no pressure to book a full session. This time is entirely yours to gather the clarity you need to see if we feel like a fit.
The Door is Open
Whether you are at a major juncture in your life or simply feel that something isn’t right, you don't need to be at a breaking point to deserve support. Change doesn't require a perfect beginning; it just requires a safe place to start.
Ready to see if we’re a good fit?
If you’re feeling brave to move through the nerves and start your journey, I’d love to hear from you.
